The Together In Steps Story

Support That Builds Skills

Our founder, Natali, brings lived experience supporting family members with Fragile X and has spent years teaching and mentoring people. We understand how much difference steady guidance makes. Our work is calm, practical and focused on building confidence through small, meaningful wins.

What Guides Us

How We Support People

The work we do at Together In Steps is grounded in patience, structure and respect - the things that make long-term learning possible.

Steady, Reliable Support

Clear routines and consistent guidance that help people learn at a comfortable pace.

Local Knowledge

Familiarity with nearby cafés, shops and services so people can practise skills in real places they’ll return to.

Respectful Learning

Support that treats people as capable learners, giving space to try, practise and grow without pressure.

Why It Works

Learning With Purpose

Many services offer community access but don’t focus on teaching. Together In Steps is built around structured learning. Every session has a goal — from crossing the road safely to ordering a coffee independently — and progress grows through repetition, support and gentle challenge.

Natali’s lived experience gives her insight into what families need and what participants often miss out on: someone who is patient, present and committed to helping them build practical skills they can use for life. This approach is grounded, realistic and designed for long-term confidence.

Helpful Info

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful details for participants, families and referrers — the things people often ask before getting started.

How do sessions usually run?

Sessions are shaped around the person’s goals and follow a clear six-step framework: Explore → Plan → Practise → Reflect → Record → Grow. This keeps learning steady, predictable and easy to build on. We begin by understanding what someone wants to learn, then break the skill into manageable steps. Sessions are usually 2–4 hours, depending on funding and what the person can comfortably manage over a 12-week period. That timeframe doesn’t mean working on only one skill — goals can shift as the person progresses.

Learning happens in the places where the skill is actually used. It might start at home, then move into the community once confidence grows. For example, someone may begin by practising a simple routine in their kitchen, then work towards ordering at a local café, tapping their card, speaking to staff or becoming familiar with a regular walking route.

Sessions are not passive outings. They’re hands-on, structured and always linked to a purpose. Each one includes real practice, gentle guidance and time to talk through what worked well and what the next step will be. Families can also see progress recorded over time, giving a clear picture of growth across the 12-week cycle.

Can you support someone who needs help in both home and community settings?

Yes. Skills often develop across both environments, so we move naturally between the home and the community depending on what we’re working on. Many people begin at home where things feel quieter and easier to manage, then take those same steps into local settings once they’re ready.

For community-based learning, we focus on real tasks — ordering at a familiar café, tapping a card, speaking to staff, navigating footpaths or learning a local route. These sessions aren’t about filling time but about practising skills where they’re actually used. When support continues across home and community, progress tends to be faster and more consistent.

Do you only support specific disabilities?

No. While we have deep personal understanding of Fragile X through Nat’s family experience, we support people with a wide range of disabilities. What matters most is how someone learns, what their goals are and the pace that feels comfortable for them. Our teaching background means we can adjust the way we explain, break down and practise skills so sessions work well for many different communication and learning styles.

How do I get started?

The first step is a quick phone call or referral form. From there, we take time to understand what you want support with and whether our approach is the right fit. If it is, we arrange an initial meet-and-greet where we can talk through goals, communication styles and what feels achievable.

We don’t begin sessions until everyone is comfortable with the plan. This keeps expectations clear and makes sure the first few weeks of support start on steady, realistic footing.
